I have been in love with the weather as long as I can remember. When I was 5 years old I declared that one day I would be a Meteorologist. Although I don't play one on TV, I am a Meteorologist. In May of 1997 I fulfilled my dream by graduating with a degree in Meteorology. Weather has become more of a hobby now since I work as a Computer Programmer, but weather remains in my heart nonetheless. Take a look at my page dedicated to weather.
The first thing I would like to discuss is a very simple thing that some people tend to mess up. You don't know how many people come up to me and have said "Is there a difference between a tornado and a hurricane?" My answer is always a big "YES!". They are 2 completely different entities! So for once and all look at these pictures. One is a hurricane and one is a tornado.
This is a Tornado. A tornado is formed within a Super Cell thunderstorm. The size can range anywhere from 100 yards wide to 1 mile wide. Winds can range from 50mph to over 300mph. Tornadoes can also occur in landfalling Hurricanes, primarily in the Northeast Corridor.
This is a Hurricane (called a Typhoon in the Far East). Hurricanes are much more expansive than tornadoes. Hurricanes can get as big as several hundred miles wide. They can form when a tropical wave is over warm water (greater than 80 degress F). Hurricanes can cause more widespread damage compared to a tornado's localized damage.
